La famiglia comprende specie mwewerbacee mwfaperenni o raramente annuali.cite-ref-foa-2-0[2]

Le mwggfoglie sono alterne, comunemente disposte a spirale; mwgwsessili o mwhapicciolate; per lo più lineari o lanceolate, raramente ovate, con margine intero.

I mwhgfiori, poco appariscenti, sono aggregati in mwhwinfiorescenze a mwiaracemo, a mwiqspiga o a mwigpannocchia, di colore dal bianco-rosato al giallo-verdognolo.

La famiglia ha un mwjqareale prevalentemente mwjgolartico che si estende in parte alla mwjwzona neotropicale e a quella paleotropicale (dall'mwkqAsia orientale sino al mwkgBorneo). È assente in mwkwAfrica e mwlaAustralia.cite-ref-foa-2-1[2]cite-ref-apw-3-0[3]

Questo raggruppamento non è contemplato dal mwnwSistema Cronquist (1981) che include le sue specie tra le mwoaLiliacee.cite-ref-4[4]

La famiglia è stata introdotta nel 2003 dalla mwpgclassificazione APG IIcite-ref-apgii-5-0[5] ed è stata convalidata dalle successive classificazioni mwqwAPG IIIcite-ref-apgiii-6-0[6] e mwsaAPG IV.cite-ref-apgiv-7-0[7]
